The locations of the test holes <br />are shown on Figure IV-2, Copies of the logs for the three lines of test <br />holes shown on Figure IV-2 are included in the Appendix to this report. <br />In order to check the hypothesis on the existence of two separate shallow <br />aquifers, a plot (Figure IV-I) of the test hole data for each line of test <br />holes was made and overlaid on the U.S.G.S. topographic map of the area, <br />The plots SlOW the surface profile and the bedrock profile, and the area <br />between the profile represents the residual and alluvial deposits containing <br />the surface shallow alluvial groundwater. From these plots, two shallow <br />aquifers are evident with a bedrock barrier separating the two aquifers. <br />The location of the bedrock barrier (the bedrock elevation is at or near <br />the ground surface elevation) corresponds to the existing ridge which separates <br />the Spring Creek and Lone Tree Creek drainage (refer to Figule IV-l which <br />illustrates the approximate location of the barrier separating the two <br />aquifers). This conclusion on the existence of two shallow aquifers is <br />supported by Figure 5 in a report by the U.S.G.S. on the groundwater <br />investigations conducted by the U.S.G.S. in the early 1960's (Reference 8). <br />The conclusion that follows is based on the above described data and <br />analysis, The first alternative (namely, a separate low nitrate water sourcE') <br />de~;cribed previously for improving the nitrate problem is feasible. It <br />appears that by constructing one or more shallow wells and tapping the <br />aquifer in the Lone Tree Creek drainage, a good quality water low in nitrate; <br />can be obtained. This solution to the problem would involve new wells and <br />a new raw water supply pipeline from the wells to the Town's distribution <br />system. <br /> <br />18 <br />
