Future Status of Water Supply Source
The previous section has described the existing conditions in the
Nunn area in relation to the quantity of water supplied by the two shallow
wells and one deep well which supply the Town's water. Also, the water
quality, specifically the nitrate concentration for numerous water sources
in 'the Nunn area, have been identified. There are several possible solutions
to solving the water quality problem which exists in the Town of Nunn. They
are as follows:
a. Locate another source of low nitrate water, preferably a
shallow well, which can supply the needed water supply,
b. Treat the groundwater from the existing shallow wells to
remove the nitrate, Two possible treatment alternatives to
remove the nitrates are (1) a reverse osmosis system, or (2)
an ion exchange system.
c. Locate a source of surface water supply for the Town.
Initially a fourth possibility existed and that was the assumption that
the existing deep well could be improved or repaired to enable a greater
production capacity. However, this alternative has already been discounted
as viable due to the low transmissibility or permeability of the Laramie/
Fox Hills formation which would produce only 5 to 15 gpm of water which is
insufficient for the Town's needs.
In analyzing the results of the water quality tests on nitrate
concentration throughout the area, it has been found that there appears to be
two separate shallow aquifers in the vicinity of Nunn, ,one of which contains
less in-situ nitrates than the other, In,the data collection phase of the
project, a considerable amount of test hole data was found for the area
near Nunn, In the early 1960's, the U.S.G.S. (Reference 7) drilled a number

17
