so water hammer is a factor. The miniml1.t1 closure tillle on the valves

at the filter is 30 seconds. (See computations, Appendix G, p. Qo..5 .)

As a further precaution against \\fa tel' ham.'ller, a 200 gallon surge tank

with an air compressor should be installed to avoid any damage.

Geologic Considerations

The project does have hazards related to geology, especially at
the intake works. The diversion structure had to be located away from
an avalanche path that was just upstream. Also, special care had to
be taken that L~e facilities were not located in mudslide areas, areas
of excessive slopes and away fron! a constriction in the stream channel
that would cause a restriction of water in a flood period. All facilities
were checked to insure the feasillility of locating them above a 100 year
flood flow.
,At the tank site, the slope and character of the soil was checked
for sui t.abili ty and stability as a tank fOlll1dation. The soil is ,1ell

drained a-~d does not lose stabi~ty or appreciable strength when satu-

rated. The existing tank foundation which is located on the site, shows
no sign of movement or failure.

- 31-
