Water Treatment
The results oi"the water, quality study will prOvide the data needed
to propose a water treatment facill ty . A sedimentation pond at the intake
is proposed toprovi.de early withdra, ral of sediment and turbidity before
the water enters the system. The filter system must again be simple,
in operation since, in a town of Rico's size, the operator will be a
part-time employee 8.11d will not have time to monitor a filter on a
full-time basis.
Treated Water Storage
The origLnal wood stave storage tank Has replaced in 1964 with the
existing 100,000 gallon steel storage tank. This tank is becoming
corroded on the inside surface am is badly in need of resurfacing.
This study will explore the needs of the town of Rico for treated .rater
storage for now and for the future, considering fire protectj,on and
extended peak period demands.
Water Distribution
The worst part of the tOlm's problems is the existing distribution
lines that are buried too shallowly to prevent freezing during the ,,1.nter
months. Many lines are leaking and are too old to repair effectively,
The lines that are, :in need of replacement were almost all originally
installed in the 1880' s. The study will define the condition of all
distribution lines and list those that must be replaced due to inadequate
service or size.

Recommendations

Water Collection

The tOml must replace the existing collection system with an intake

that will eliminate blockage from icing conditions and debris. The intake

must also be easy to ,operate and maintain. The intake must be d'3signed
