"

A house count was made on September 21, 1976, of the Starkville
area. In Starkville there is a total of 67 housing units available with present
occupation of about 48 units. There are two (2) bars, and one church. The
school building is currently under plans for rehabilitation as a neighborhood
facility.

Gre~ille has about 51 hOl.\sing units with about 42 units presently
occupied. In South Starkville there are available 25 units with 18 units
occupied, and the potential of some commercial usage of several units.

In all cases the unoccupied units would require considerable rehabili-
tation but they do indicate the potential of future growth. A meeting with the
citizens of the area indicates 48 families in Starkville with a population of 114,
South Starkville has 20 families and Greekville has 42 families. A discrepancy
is noted in the memory of the citizens on the boundary limits and existing families.
In Starkville alone the number of families agree with the occupied housing count.
Interpretation of the data provides a population of 324 in the Starkville area with
the following breakdown: Starkville 114, Greekville 147, and South Starkvi1le 63.

Factors that can affect the growth of Starkville area will be availability
of utilities, and increased job oppC>rtunities. This area will grow with the same
pattern as the town of Trinidad which depends on transportation, Junior College
growth, agriculture and re-emergency of the coal industry. Therefore, the
projections of population as shown on Figure 1, relate to growth as envisioned
for Trinidad, It has been shown that housing and/or availability of land for
housing via replacement of abandoned units could create a population complex of
over 450 people. On Figure 1, a more realistic population for year 2000 is be-
tween 200 and 260 for Starkvi1le and 400 to 450 for the Starkvi1le area. This
data is summarized in Tables 1 and 2.

Projections are made, in Tables 1 and 2, for both water and sewage flows
from the current population to the year 2000. Water needs for Starkville only
would require a source supply and treatment for about 20 gpm with stol..lge for
fire protection and other emergency needs. Sewage waste-water treatment re-
quires a process plant handling an average flow of about 20 gpm (Starkville and
South S tarkville ).

Recommendations

Starkville is a small suPPOrt community to Trinidad for living quarters
and to the Southern part of the County for agricultural labor support. A change
in the coal industry will have an immediate impact on the area with several mines
adjacent to Starkville. The town has an ability to grow provided the utilities are
installed.

- 4 -
