,

SE CTION II

EXISTING UTILITIES & POPULATION GROWTH

Water

The town of Starkville has a water system that was installed by the
Santa Fe Railroad and donated to the town in 1955. This is a very old cast iron
water line system that appears to be in relatively good condition. Individual
house taps are through water meters but most of the meters are in need of
repair. The meter boxes are cast iron and do not have insulation.

The collection system consists of open end pipes laid in the stream bottom
with rubble gabions protecting the openings from high flow washouts. The springs
feeding the collection system are on the west side of Fishers Peak, some six
miles from the town on Clear Creek. The town has three large storage tanks of
which two require extensive cleaning. There are no treatment facilities for re-
moval of turbidity or chlorination.

Sewage

Most of the residences are connected to septic tanks. There are several
outdoor toilets, The soil conditions and lot sizes are not conducive to septic tank
leach fields. The lack of a sewage system is a definite factor in any future stability
of this town.

Telephone

The town is being served by the Mountain Bell Telephone system.

Gas

There is no natural gas service in the town. Most residences use propane
gas system and several homes have wood/coal for heating. Electrical power is
used by several for cooking as well as lighting of the household.

Population Development

The population is studied in terms of the town limits of Starkville, the
small area just south of the town known as South Starkville, and an area just north
of town referred to as Greekville.

- 3 -
