often been accompanied by simultaneous, more destructive floods
on the Arkansas River. The descriptive accounts of Arkansas River
flooding appear to dominate such historic records as are available
for the region.

*

*

*

INTERMEDIATE REGIONAL FLOODS on Fountain Creek are floods that have

an average frequency of occurrence in the order of once in loo years.

They are determined from analyses of floods that have occurred on

Fountain Creek and other streams in the general area.

*

*

*

STANDARD PROJECT FLOODS are floods which would be exceeded only on

rare occasions and are reasonably characteristic of the geographical

area in which the drainage basin is located. In many instances,

they may define the upper limit of flooding against which protec-

tion may be sought. The Standard Project Fluod Dn'Fountain Creek

would average about 7 feet higher than the Intermediate Regional

Flood along most of the stream.

*

*

*

FLOOD DAMAGES resulting from either the Intermediate Regional Flood

or the Standard Project Flood would be more extensive than from

past floods because of increased development in the flood plain,

and the wider extent, greater depths, and higher velocities of

flood waters.

*

*

*

MAIN FLOOD SEASON. Analysis of climatological data and inspection

of the flood history for the Arkansas River subbasin above John

Martin Dam show that the most severe flood-producing storms occur

during the late spring or summer months. The spring season is the

transitional period between the occurrence of instability and fron-

tal activity and is subject to storms caused by both types of ac-

tivities or a combination thereof. Also, the movement and interac-

tion between airmasses during these seasons are more pronounced.

This may result in heavy spring snow storms in the higher elevations

or in high intensity rains during the spring. These storms and the

2
