SUMMARY OF FLOOD SITUATION

The city of Pueblo, Colorado, is located at the

junction of the Arkansas River and fountain Creek (see Plate 1).

Fountain Creek flows south through the northeast sector of Pueblo.

This report covers the portion of Fountain Creek that is within

the planning jurisdiction of the Pueblo Regional Planning Commis-

sion. The study area encompasses Miles 0.00 to 21.48 as shown on

Plate 3.

The principal residential development of Pueblo is on

high ground adjoining the creek, but there are some residential

developments on lands adjacent to the stream in the study reach.

furthermore, a great flood could inundate practically all of the

downtown commercial and industrial areas. Portions of these

lands have been inundated by floods of the past, and even larger

areas would be inundated by the potentially greater floods of the

future.

A stream gaging station was established in 1922 on

Fountain Creek in the vicinity of the 8th Street Bridge. This

station was discontinued in 1925. A recording gage station was

subsequently installed at the bridge in 1940. The station ~as

washed out during the 1965 flood.

Historical documente and newspaper files have been

searched for information concerning past floods. The local flood

situation on Fountain Creek has been developed from these inves-

tigations and studies of possible future floods. The following

paragraphs summarize significant findings which are discussed in

more detail in succeeding sections of the report.

"

"

"

HISTORICAL fLOODS have been recorded on Fountain Creek in the

general Pueblo area in 1855, 1864, l893, 1894, 1904, 1921, 1935,

and 1965. Reliable information of other damaging floods that

occurred prior to these dates has been lost in the obscurity of

time. The damaging floods experienced on Fountain Creek have

1
