physical faaturas of the watershed can produce the rapid concen-

tration of runoff that characterizes flash floods of high peak

flows, small volumes, and short durations.

*

*

*

VELOCITIES OF WATER during the Standard Project Flood would

range up to about 26 feet per second (18 miles per hour) in the

main channel of the creek. Velocities outside of the main channel

vary widely, depending upon location, but would reach about g feet

per second (8 miles per hour) in some areas. These high velocities

during a major flood would be extremely dangerous to life and

property. Velocities greater than 3 feet per second combined with

depths of 3 feet or more are generally considered hazardous even

to adults.

*

*

*

DURATION OF FLOODS on Fountain Creek is relatively short as

compared to those on the Arkansas River at Pueblo. For the Inter-

mediate Regional Flood, duration above bankfull stage would be

about 9 and 10 hours, respectively, in the upper and lower reaches

of Fountain Creek. During the Intermediate Regional Flood, the

creek would rise over 9 feet in S hours with a maximum rate of rise

of about 204 feet per hour in the upper reach. Similarly, the rise

would be more than 10 feet in 5.3 hours with a maximum of about

2.4 feet per hour in the lower reach. The duration of the Standard

Project Flood would be about 19 and 20 hours, respectively, in the

upper and lower reaches of Fountain Creek. During the Standard

Project Flood, the stream would rise over 17 feet in 8 hours with

a maximum rate of rise of about 2.9 feet per hour in the upper

reach. The rise would be about 18 feet in 8.7 hours in the lower

reach with a maximum rate of about 2.9 feet per hour.

*

*

*

FLOOD DAMAGE PREVENTION MEASURES by local interests consist of
improvements in the Fountain Creek channel whereby it can now
carry approximately the 1965 flood of 47,000 cubic feet per second
from the 8th Street Bridge to below the 4th Street Bridge.

3
