C. Types of Rainstorms
Rainstorms in the Yuma area are either low intensity, general

rains or high intensity, thunderstorm type rains.

The June 5, 1965 storm was a general storm. This type of storm

covers very large areas and in general produces a low intensity, long

duration rainfall. A large general storm will usually produce rainfall

continuously for 1 to 5 days:

The thunderstorm on the other hand usually produces the majority

of its rain in less than an hour. The intense portion of a thunderstorm
usually covers only a few square miles and are seldom stationary.

f

D. Design Storms:
The regionalized S.C.S. rainfall probabilities have been used for
preparation of the deSign storms because of the increased reliability
obtained by regionalizing precipitation records from several local
stations. Figures 8 and 9 show the 100 year, 24 hour and 6 hour maximum
point rainfall depths. Table 2 gives point rainfall (thunderstorm) design

storms for the 100 year recurrence interval, the 10 year recurrence

interval, and the 2 year recurrence interval.

Table 2
Design Point Thunderstorm Rainfall

I

,

Probable Return Period

Maximum Rain for Each Duration

5 min 10 min 15 mi n 30 min 60 min 2 hr 6 hr 24 hr
100 year .87 1.35 1.70 2.36 2.9,9 3.29 3.84 4.56
10 year .56 .86 1.09 1. 51 1.92 2.14 2.62 3.18
2 year .35 .54 .68 .94 1.20 1.38 1.69 2.07

-11-
