by the County much of that time recalls only discharges on the steeper
slopes near this ephemeral drainageway and only minor ponding in this
swale. He did not recall any roads requiring barracading because of
either flood over\lows or a washout. This was confirmed by Mike Agesnen
who is also employed by the County and has lived 56 years in Yuma. Both
gentlemen pointed out the different flooding characteristics of the south
part of the County on the Arikaree Creek basin and to the north on the
Frenchman River near Holyoke. During the storms of May, 1935 and June,
1965, both of these regions experienced high flows, but no flows were
noted in the ephemeral drainageway north of town. Both of these major
storms damaged bridges on Arikaree Creek. These observations are the
only "flow records" obtained on the ephemeral drainageway basin.
Storm flows and flooding depths have not been recorded in the
urbanized portion of Yuma, but this flooding occurs almost annually so
that the patterns are well known. The worst flooding recalled by Mervin
,Marr during his 65 years in the Yuma area occurred on June 8, 1974 when
a 3.50 inch thunderstorm caused flooding throughout town, and in particular
adjacent to Lake Yuma and the Legion Pond. Ouring this storm, a large
depression along Hoag Avenue immediately south of the Fairgrounds trapped
approximately 2 feet of water causing damage to the local residences.
However, the entire "pond" infiltrated into the underlying soil within a
short period before methods of relieving the flooding could be accomplished.

-10-
