After installation, annual maintenance will cost the Federal <br />Government about $4,400 and non-Federal interests approximately $35,300. <br />The benefit-cost ratio for the program is estimated to be 1.61 to 1, using price <br />levels adopted by the Federal Inter-agency River Basin Comnittee on September 21, <br />1951. <br /> <br />The recommended remedial measures are as follows; <br />(a) Retirement of 5,220 acres of privately owned dry-farm <br />land and conversion to pasture. This acreage will be treated first <br />with dikes or diversions and then seeded to grass. <br />(b) The construction of 260 miles of terraces on .dry-farm <br />land to remain in crop production, and 1,460 miles on pasture and <br />range lands where sheet flows of surface runoff are causing lateral <br />sloughing of channels and the development of upland head cuts. <br />(c) The construction of 380 water spreading and diversion <br />structures on range an<;l. cr<;>p t<tP.d to slow down surface runoff and in- <br />crease infiltration, as well as decrease sediment coming from these <br />areas. ' <br /> <br />(d) The reforestation of 3,260 acres, some, of which are pre- <br />sently being grazed, in the mountainous portion of the watershed. <br />(e) The installation of additional fire protection, and <br />90 miles of fence. <br />(f) The construction in the plains area of 2,800 small flood <br />detention dams capable of temporarily retarding an average of about <br />20 acre feet of surface runoff for each 640 acres. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />
