SECTION 205 RECONNAISSANCE STUD!

DlTl.ODUCTIOR

The city of Malta i. located along the Kilk River in Phillip. County
in north-central Montana. Major flooding ha. occurred periodically
throughout the Milk River basin as recently as September 1986. Malta
staged a successful flood fight during this event. The flood problems,
potential solutions, and recommendations are addressed in this reconnai.-
sance report.

STUDY AUTHOIUT1'

Thi. .tudy was authorized under Section 205 of the Flood Control Act
of 1948, as amended, and was conducted in accordance with the Principles
and Guidelines for Water and Related Land Resources Planning.

REPORT AND STUD! PROCESS

Federal water resource planning by the Corps of Engineers is

accomplished in two phases..a reconnaissance phase and a feasibility

phase. The reconnaissance phase is conducted at full Federal expense,

while the cost of the feasibility phase is shared equally between the

Federal Government and the non-Federal sponsor(s). This report contains

a sUlDDary of investigations, results, conclusions, and recommendations of

the reconnaissance phase.
