" .

Felix L. Spar),,,
February S, 1977
Page Three

4.

Irrigation Canals

.,
:h
_.
~r

Canals, in many cases, run perpendictilar to natural
flows) and therefore, act as dams, and; in some
Qases ~anals use portions of existing drainage ways
to car~y irrigation waters, therefore; decreasing the
carrying capacity of such drainage~ays for flood~aters.
Thus, it is recommended that the study cover irriRation
ditch effects on drainage patterns and methods of
minimizing problem areas. The Mead Lateral-Eaton Draw
draipage is recommended as a study example regarding
this subject.

In addition to the ahove four subjects for. study, it is recommended
that the Corps proposal set forth methods of implementing alterna-
tive means of controlling adverse impacts and consequences of
basin activities as they relate to potential flooding on the
Poudre River floOdplain. Weld County staff personnel feel that
the above subjects should definitely be included in the scope of
study of the proposed Corps'project.

During the approximate two-year study period, we would expect to
participate in'the study by providing input data and monitoring
results. The ~tndy proposal is of great interest to us if it
includes the siibject areas noted above. We hope you share our
interests and will forward this letter to the Corps of Engineers
along with a f~vorable recommendation.

Sincerely,

~Nd' ,.,..~2;"'~r:.;(f

June Steinmark, Chairman
Board of County Commissioners

copy to: Karl Koffman
Corps of Engineers, Omaha District
215 N. 17th Street
Omaha, Nebraska 68102
"

.- 1'"._~.
