Sparks:

This letter is in regard to a proposed Corps of Engineers
companion type floodplain information study of the Cache La
Poudre Basin. As we understand the study, it will provide
technical information on the consequen6es of future basin
activities as they relate to potential flooding on the
Poudre Riv~r floodplain,

~'.... .

In Weld ,County there are four principal subjects, as fo11O\"s,
which we;' would desire to be addressed by such a study in order
to benefit our planning and engineering efforts:
'.
1. Gravel Operations

The Poudre floodplain contains quality gravel deposits
which are covered with very little over burden, and
w~ich extend to depths of' 55 feet in the Greeley area.
Current and future floodplain use will relate directly
tb gravel operations. Gravel stock piles within the
floodplain, however, may deviate from Federal, State
and County floodplain standards by displacing flood-
w~ters onto lands which otherwise would be unaffected,
It would not be practical to require such stock piles
be located outside the floodplain in most cases.
ThereforeJ technical information regarding the conse-
quences of such activities and realistic approaches
to minimizing adverse consequences is a concern of
this jurisdiction. For instanccJ the proposed CorpR
study may address (1) stockpile effects on flood
waters rega~ding up or downstream damages, (2) typical

WELD COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
NORMAN CARLSON GLENN K.
