t

USING GPS/GIS TO INVENTORY DAMAGED STRUCTURES

,
i'

by

5
~
~

Eric A. Berman

ABSTRACT

'{

During the midwestern flooding of 1993, GPS/GlS was used in illinois to inventory damaged
structures from the Mississippi River. A team of FEMA and GeoReal'ch personnel worked their
way down the state stopping at damaged areas and collecting information on structures that have
a high potential for being substantially damaged. The inventory was then downloaded to
computers at the Corps of Engineers, Rock Island District and converted into maps showing the
inventory. These maps were then sent to the local communities. This information was then used
by local building officials in issuing building permits.

!
~
~~

~'

Eric A.
