Investigate the dam and reservoir at least every five years to determine <br />their continuing sat'ety. <br /> <br />42 states (84~ currently perform this function <br /> <br />Comments: <br /> <br />A. Connecticut investigates High and Significant Hazard potential dams <br />only. Lower Hazard potential dams inspected but on less frequent <br />interval. Owner has option to hire private engineer to perform every <br />other inspection. <br /> <br />B. Florida investigates new dams only. <br /> <br />C. Georgia has annual inspection of High Hazard structures. <br /> <br />D. Idaho refers to its Statutory Code Section 42-1717: All dams 20 ft or <br />more in height or mine tailings structures 30 ft or more in height are <br />inspected biennially. <br /> <br />E. Indiana I s inspections are made at least every two years and more <br />frequently when warranted. <br /> <br />F. Iowa's authority is not exercised for all dams; systematic inspections <br />only for "Major" dams. <br /> <br />G. Kansas legislature has provided no funding or staff for any periodic <br />investigations. <br /> <br />H. Maine reports that investigation may be part of regulations when <br />developed. <br /> <br />1. Maryland refers to an article "WRA Report", Summer, 1985. <br /> <br />J. Mississippi inspects High Hazard dams. <br /> <br />K. Montana exempts any High Hazard dams that were inspected by the Corps <br />under P.L. 92-367 until October 1, 1990; also exempted are federal- <br />owned or -licensed and-inspected dams, FERC controlled, or having a <br />Montana metal mine reclamation operating permit. <br /> <br />L. North Carolina investigates High Hazard dams at least every 2 years, <br />all others at least every five years. <br /> <br />M. North Dakota inspects some dams longer than five years and some less <br />then five years. <br /> <br />N. Oklahoma investigations are not (based on) a statute but a policy. <br />Lack of funding prevents all inspections from being made. <br /> <br />O. Oregon reports that sufficient funds to accomplish inspections are not <br />appropriated. <br /> <br />-18. <br />
