The lab(lratory
testing ;Jrogram will evaluate the standard proflerties of :~e
eX1sting and proposed levee materials. Se1ected triax~al and
direct shear tests will be conducted as nec~ssary.
E. ~ecommendations will be presented for a slJitable configuration

'-.--

of the Wp.st embankment based en the foundation conditiClns and
the materials available for c~>"'struction. The evaluation will
include estimates of settlement, slope stability and ;eepage
for the recommended configurations. It will be assumed that
borrow materi al wi 11 meet the requi rements of the Phase I Zone
1 materi a1.
7. A report will be prepared discussing the items above. The
investigation and report preparation will be conducted under
superviSion of a registered professional engineer.
8. The recommendations and re~ort will be reviewed with the
Geotechnical Section of the Albuquerque Branch of the Corps of
Engineers, and a response will be made to their comments.
g. The geoteChnical engineers will assist in the preparation of
plans, specifications, and cost estimates for the project.
They also wil' provide input as necessary on the geoteChnical
content of the pi ans such as the confi gurat i on of the levees.
They will also review the specifications from Phase] including
sections on foundati^n pre~aration, placement of embankment
materials and constructiorl of seepage control structures.
Modifications to the specifications will be made as necessary.
No borrow areas will be investigated as a part of this Phase ]1
wcrk. Material characteristic of the borrow areas identified and
used in Phase] will be assumed to be aVailable for Phase II. In
the construction documents, tne Contractor will be given the
responsibility of locating acceptable borrow material.

B. Field Control. Survey and Base Maps. Donald O. Knapp. under
subcontract to MEe, will obtain tfle needed surveying for the
project. A survey traverse line wl,l be established along the
levee and will be used as the basis of control for the design and
construction work. The following work scope will be completed:

1. Estab11sh a base survey line on the west levee, which is
identifiable in the field and can be re-established at the time
of construction of the west levee, upstream of the U.S. 160
bridge approximately 1,800 feet.
Z. Survey cross sections of the existing levee at locations
desi gnated by MEC and at intervals of lOO-feet along those
areas where construction work is to be completed. Cross
