Flood of'Friday, June 3, 1921

The flood of 1921 was the third flood known to be caused

rapid snowmelt in the mountains and heavy general rains.16 Using

slope-area measurements, the Corps estimated the peak discharge

to be 7,800 cfs.17 This was apparently the second largest flood

at Erie and was close to the 25-year discharge (8,210 cfs) as
computed by the SCS.18 Depth of flooding was considered to have
been slightly less than that of the 1876 flood.19 Damages reported
by the Corps for this flood were as follows:20

Above Superior $ 1,950
In Superior 1,950
Superior to Erie 19,510
In Erie 87,780
Below Erie 19,510
Total $130,700

Regional newspaper accounts of the flood of 1921 in Erie are

overshadowed by descriptions of the damages and human suffering

from the great flood in Pueblo which occurred on the same weekend.

A few articles from the Greeley Tribune and the Daily Camera out
of Boulder are reproduced in this report. These articles indicate

damage to property in Erie from the flood of 1921 was very severe.

16U.5.
