Additional material which supports the newpaper descriptions

of this flood is contained in interviews with long-time residents

of Erie, as reported in the book, Erie: Yesterday and Today:

In 1921, Erie had the biggest flood of its history, the
water reached as high as the counter in the stores and
people moved about the area in boats.21

Jean (Slater) and Stella (Lee) also remembered the flood
of June 3, 1921, when quite a few houses were washed off
their ~oundations and the railroad tracks were washed
out. Water reached counter tops in stores.22

Following this flood, the town board passed an ordinance

setting a time limit for area residents to reset their houses
back on their respective foundations.23

21sociology and History classe$ of Erie High School (Mr.
and Mrs. Shine Miller), Edition 1, page 5.

22ibid, Edition 2, page 8.

23Erie Town Council Minutes, June 1921.

-8-
