Flood of 1891

The flood in the spring of 1891 was also caused by rapid

snowmelt in the mountains and heavy general rains according to a

report prepared by the Corps of Engineers in 1945. No original

source material concerning this flood has been found, and no copies

of the Erie Canfield Independent, published during this period,

are known to exist.

Flood of June 1896

This flood was reported by the Corps to be the highest of

record in the part of the Coal Creek valley near Louisville,
Colorado. 13 Flood damages reported by the Corps of Engineers for
this flood were as follows:14

Above Superior

$

980

Superior to Erie

19,760

In Erie

9,760

Below Erie

Total

5,850
$36,350

No issues of the Erie Independent, which may have a descrip-

tion of this event, could be found. However, an interview with

a Mr. C. C. Montgomery during the early 1970's revealed some

information probably, about the flood of June 1896:

Among his memories of an unusual event of this past was a
flood during the 1890's when he was a small boy living in
Erie. He and his mother had gone to Boulder in a horse and
buggy to do some errands. It was a very bad fl~gd and kept
him and his mother in Boulder for about a week.

13United States Engineer office, Appendix II, page 28-29.

14ibid.
