<br />altering the orientation of inlets to min:4mize sedimentation <br />revealed that if a lagoon is used, it wou~d best be oriented <br />downstream as parallel to the direction of flow of the river <br />as possible. Sedimentation will still ocdur, requiring <br />periodic dredging, since the still pool will tend to deposit <br />suspended material. It appeared that facili.ties directly on <br />the riverbank worked best to minimize shoaling. <br /> <br />A model study conducted by the Corps ,of Engineers <br />Waterways ExperimEnt station on Shoaling at Harbor Entrances <br />(Technical Report HL-79-5) yielded information which could <br />be useful for siting and designing a boat launch facility on <br />the Gunnison River. The purpose of the study was to <br />"investigate the principles involved in shoaling in harbor <br />entrances and some of the factors to be considered in the <br />development of sol ut,ions to the problems. Ii <br /> <br />The key concl usion of the study per1:inent to the <br />preferred location: on the Gunnison River is as follows: <br />"Shoaling in harbor entrances depends on the principle of <br />lateral differential in water level. An opening in the bank <br />line required for a harbor entrance tends to cause a <br />lowering of the water level at the entrance. When there is <br />a lowering of the water level on one side 'of the channel, <br />there is a greater tendency for the slower moving bottom <br />currents with sediment to move toward the 'lower elevation. <br />Therefore, plans for the elimination or rE\duction of <br />shoaling in entrances should be designed to reduce the <br />amount of lowering of the water level near the entrance or <br />to prevent the movement of bottom currents toward the lower <br />elevation." Therefore, channel cross section within the <br />normal expected flow-wetted perimeter should be disturbed as <br />little as possible to avoid lowering the water surface. <br />Also, structures which divert the lower currents away from <br />the boat launch wculd assist in preventin<1 shoaling. <br /> <br />An evaluation of the boat launch sites in the area of <br />preference follow~;: <br /> <br />Streamside Launch Site, Upstream of Drain: <br /> <br />This site would provide access to the river from the <br />riverbank. The site is located along a straight reach of <br />river, from about station 37000 to about ~tation 37500, <br />immediately upstream of a slight inflection in the river. <br />The inflection occurs at the confluence of a drain \-lith the <br />river. This site would have the benefits 'of a long and <br />straight approach in relatively slower velocity flO\-l from <br />upstream, thereby facilitating easy approach and take out of <br />craft. However, launching would be just ups'tream of a <br />riffle associated with the river inflection, requiring <br />attention to navigating immediately after 'launching. Also <br />this site contains significant established vegetation which <br />would need to be removed, and the site is also separated <br />from the parking area by a drain. <br /> <br />20 <br />
