II
Ii
II
II
Ii
I
II

page 4 of the CRF, and for any others evaluated while in
the field, you will be using the checklist at Part 4A of
the CRF for guidance on what to look for and the
checklist at Part IB of the CRF for guidance on what
information to record. The new development checklist at
Part 4A of the CRF summarizes the NFIP regulations, as
follows:

Number 1 - Residences, including mobile homes, need
to be checked for the presence or absence of
elevation. The type and adequacy of elevation is
also important, e.g., North Dakota prohibits
elevation on piers or piles. If available, use a
hand level to estimate heights. Mobile homes
should be checked for tie-downs,

Number 2 - Check residences to ensure that
floodproofed basements have not been allowed. very
few communities have been granted exceptions to
this prohibition.

II

Number 3 - Nonresidential construction can be
flobdproofed or elevated. Check the selected
protection technique for adequacy.

Number 4 - Check existing structures for
indications of substantial improvements and where
they appear to have occurred, check for evidence of
flood protection (elevation or floodproofing).

II
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
i I
I

Number 5 - Using the floodway map, check for
encroachments.

Number 6 - Check the adequacy of subdivision
drainage.

Number 7 - Many communities are unaware of the
broad scope of the development permit requirement.
Check for the proper location, placement and
protection of fill, channel improvements, gas or
liquid storage tanks, fencing, parking or other
paved areas, and other forms of development that
could affect flooding or be susceptible to flood
damages 0

Number 8 - Under E.O. 11988, Federal agencies are
bound by stricter floodplain management
requirements than are communities under the NFIP.
Try to identify any Federal or federally-supported
floodplain construction and check it for adequacy.

- 11 -
