Number 9 - Structures in V-Zones must be located
landward of mean high tide, Check for any that
have been sited seaward of this boundary,

I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

FOR COASTAL AREAS ONLY (in addition to 1-8 above):

Number 10 - When piles or other forms of open works
are used for elevation in V-Zones, the structure
must be anchored to the elevation supports. Check
for the adequacy of anchoring.

Number II - To prevent collapse of structures in
V-Zones from wave impact, the area below the lowest
floor must be kept free of obstructions or
enclosures, or else breakaway walls must be used.
Check for compliance with this requirement.

!

Number 12 - The use of fill for elevation and the
placement of mobile homes (except in existing
mobile home parks and subdivisions) is prohibited
in V-Zones. So also is the alteration of sand
dunes or mangrove stands, since they can act as
natural barriers to waves. Check for compliance
with each of these four requirements.

Use the checklist on Documentation at Part IB of the CRF
to determine what information should be recorded for
structures that you intend to check on during the permit
file review, and for all apparent violations.

3, Map Accuracy: You will have identified sites during
your preparations where map accuracy appears to be in
question. Additional sites may be identified as you
perform the tour. The map accuracy checklist at Part 4
of the CRF lists some of the activities that can affect
map accuracy. You should review this list prior to the
tour and while in the field to assist you in performing
a complete assessment of map accuracy. Where it is in
question, use the documentation checklist at Part I C of
the CRF for guidance on how to record your findings.

4. Summary of Tour Results: Before initiating the next
task, the reviewer needs to summarize the results of the
floodplain tour. First, review each of the lists of
sites compiled during the CAPE preparation phase to
ensure that all those listed have been visited, and that
all pertinent data has been recorded for each site,
Second, choose those new development sites for which
permit file reviews are to be performed. Make every
effort to ensure that data has been collected on each
category of new development that is to be discussed with
local officials and checked during the permit file
review (new buildings, improvements to existing
buildings, development other than buildings,

- 12 -
