I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

Based on the numbers presented, it is reasonable to
assume that large floods will occur in the future on the
Arkansas River in the La Junta, Colorado area.

In addition to flooding from the Arkansas River, King
and Anderson Arroyos have flooded La Junta in 1886, 1965,
1969, and 1972. There are not any gages on these Arroyos to
record the magnitude of these floods, but the volumes were
sufficient to cause costly damage in the City of La Junta
(reference 1).

Figure 1 shows the stream gage located at Colorado Highway 109
Bridge. Flood photographs from the 1955 Flood are presented in
Figure 2. Flood photographs from the 1965 Flood a~e presented
in Figure 3.

2.3 Flood Travel Times

Approximate Travel Times for the Pueblo to La Junta
reach are shown in Table 3. It is estimated that the travel
time for various flood waves range from approximately 23 to 42
hours for the Pueblo to La Junta reach (reference 7).

TABLE 3, - TRAVEL TIMES of FLOOD FLOWS
between PUEBLO and LA JUNTA, COLORADO

I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

5
