IU/!I ~ l't"R <br />~04 <br />01) ; <br /> <br />City of Pueblo <br /> <br />The Honorable Gary Hart <br />United States Senator <br />254 Russell Senate Office Bldg. <br />washington, D.C. 20510 <br /> <br />Dear Senator Hart; <br /> <br />As you may be aware, Phase 1 planning for the proposed Fountain <br />Creek Flood Control Project has been completed by the Corps of Engineers. <br />The Chief of Engineers has recently forwarded his report to the Secretary <br />of the Army recommending that the project be authorized for construction <br />(copy enclosed). <br /> <br />Since the project is not yet authorized, I do not expect the <br />President's FY 83 budget request to contain funding for it. This will <br />be most unfortunate, since the corps is in a position to proceed with <br />Phase 2 engineering and design work if funds are appropriated for that <br />purpose. <br /> <br />As local project sponsor, The Fountain Creek Commission feels strongly <br />that some method should be found to enable the corps to proceed with Phase <br />2 engineering on this project even though authorization for construction <br />is probably some time in the future. Thus, we need your advice and assist- <br />ance as to how funds can be made available for this work in the FY 83 <br />budget. <br /> <br />This project enjoys broad public support from all sectors of the <br />community and local funds in excess of $1,669,000 through 1980 have already <br />been spent on land acquisition, relocations, preliminary levies and re- <br />creational facilities. With this significant dollars and.cents expression <br />of local support, it seems unfortunate that the project cannot proceed. <br /> <br />Any assistance that you can provide us would be greatly appreciated. <br /> <br />QaZV <br />D.
