<br /> <br />Glossary <br /> <br />Flood Hazard Mitigation: A plan designed to alleviate the <br />effects of a major disaster or flood emergency and to avoid <br />future disasters in the affected areas, Hazard mitigation can <br />reduce the severity of the effects of flood emergency OD people <br />and property by reducing the cause or occurrence of the hazard; <br />reducing exposure to the hazard; or reducing the effects <br />through preparedness. <br /> <br />Emergency Preparedness: A program to reduce vulnerabil~ <br />ityofpeople and communities to damage, injury, and loss of life <br />and property resulting from natural or man-made catastro- <br />phes. <br /> <br />Floodplain Management: A comprehensive approach to re- <br />duce the damaging effects of floods and provide for optimal use <br />orland and water resources within the floodplain. This includes <br />floodplain zoning ordinances, building codes, health regula- <br />tions, and special purpose ordinances. <br /> <br />Floodway: Means the channel of a river or other watercourse <br />and the adjacent land areas that must be reserved in order to <br />discharge the base flood without cumulatively increasing the <br />water surface elevation more than 1.0 foot. <br /> <br />Floodplain!
