Newspaper Clippings
New Jamestown bridge ready

By PAT HYiJE
For the Camera
JAMESTOWN James-
towners can now feel confident
when the two vans that carry
about half of Jamestown Ele-
mentary School's students roll
across the 35-loot bridge that
spans South James Creek.
They probably weren't so con.
fident a couple of years ago. The
old wooden bridge rated 15 out
of a possible 100 on a Colorado
Highway safety test.
"The Highway Department
eventually condemned the
bridge," said Jamestown site
engineer Frank Burch. It was
either reinforce the old bridge
with steel or replace it, he said.
"That old bridge had definitely
seen better days."
In the wooden bridge's place.
there now stands a 44-foot.wide.
two.lane, precast-concrete
bridge.
The bri.tige forks to the left of
Main Street. . about a half.mile
east of the "Mere" - or town
mercantile store. It was built
over the past two years with
state grants.
James.town Mayor Colleen
Williams said one factor that
helped the town land the grants
was that the state knew that the
school children - from kinder.
gartners through sixth. graders
- were crossing the bridge dai.
ly.
The grants were' worth
$135,000, but Jamestown used
only about $92,000 to plan and
construct the bridge.
"We were very conservative
in building it," Williams said.
"We didn't want to spend tax-
payers money if we didn't have
to."

A commission composed of.
Fire Chief Tim O'Dair, Town
Trustee Allan Mueller. and
Burch worked with the RBD En.
gineering Consultants of Fort.
Collins on the bridge planning.
"It was nice that we didn't
have to hire outside help for a
lot of the planning and grant.
writing," Williams said. "We
just put our minds to it and
made it happen." .

Camera stall phOIO bV Charles Wendt

THIS IS TERRIBLE.

Jl.MIIH.,1 ....r....IIr.IIJ "'Ipil"d 11ft' Ih.. ...co.
ur th_ I!.arth
Me! \\'anen ....lked down from Jim.
lown todilY, craning by way or the Gray
Eal:le mill.
