If the basement had an external I;tainlay, it was still
considered a basement and a c:omment was n()ted. Because all
sides of each structure could no1: be ,;een from the street, it
was not always obvious: whether or not the structure had a
basement.

REQUIRED EQUIPMENT

Several items were needed to acc()mplil;h the development of
the directory. First, a lap-top computer with a. data base
program makes data collection, storaqe, alld manipulation easier
than any hand method. A cigarette-lighte:t" adapt. or works as the
best DC power source. These adaptorl; com'~ in many different
varieties. caution should be taken t() makl~ sure the adaptor has
the same polarity as the computer. J~ bat'tery pa.ck could be used
but is not suggested. Data base proqrams con1:inually read and
write to the hard drive which could ,,,ear down a battery pack in a
few hours. Another helpful item is a hand-held level, which can
be used in comparing elevations of t,,,o di:Eferl~nt. locations in the
flood plain. A pair of binoculars can be used for reading
addresses that are not clear. A variety l)f maps, are also needed.
FIRM panels, a good street. map that iilso iden1:ifies streams, and
detailed mapping showing t.he layout of lo'ts with their respective
addresses would be useful.

INSTALLATION AND ()PERA'rION

INSTALLATION FOR AN IBM COMPATIBLE COMPUT:ER

The Flood Risk Directory is contained on one, 360k diskette.
The diskette contains the necessary files for us,ing the data base
with dBase III Plus. These files are archived a.nd will need to
be installed on your computer I shard dri VI~. You. will need
approximately 1. 2 megabytes of di.sk I;pace on you.r C drive.

To install the database, put the Fll)od Risk Directory disk
into drive A and type: A:AINSTALL. Thil. command will create a
directory named C: \ARAPAHOE and will unarchive, the files onto
your hard drive in that directory. ~rhe installation is complete.

4
