BFE - The Base Flood Elevation (BFE) was in'terpolated from
the FIRM panel for Zone AE' s. Interpolatin9 t,he BFE was one
of the more difficult tasks. The BFE:'s \;'er'a spaced too far
apart with too much elevation change between the BFE's.
Addi tional BFE' s were physically dra"m on the FIRM panel to
make the interpolation easier. A Fle,od Insurance study
technical report could assist in this interpolation and
should be made available to the surveying t.aam.

ELEVATION DIFFERENCE ,- Elevation difference is the estimated
difference in elevation between the g'rade surrounding the
structure and the lowest floor. Xf the structure had a
basement, the elevation difference between 1the grade and
first floor was subtracted from 805 feet (average basement
height) to obtain the proper elE~vatie'n diff.arenceo

LOWEST FLOOR ELEVATION - The 10lvest floor, ac(~ording to the
National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), is the lowest
enclosed area of a structure (including a basement). The
lowest floor elevations were not provided a:; a part of this
survey.

FLOODWAY - From the interpretation of the FIRM panels, it was
determined that the structure was in the flc)odway if any part
of the l;tructure or surrounding grade was in t.he floodway.

STRUCTURE TYPE - The type was obvious in mo:;t cases. The
different types of structures noted in the directory are:

COMM - Commercial,
INDU - Industrial,
~i - Manufactured Home,
R (n) - Residential, where (n) equals 1:he number of
family units,
OTHR - other type of structure, and
NONE - no structure in place.

The default structure type ffJr churches, park pavilions, or
state-owned buildings was commercial. Residences were
identified with an R followed by the number of family units.
Other types of structures (O':rHR) are further explained in the
comment field.

BASEMENT - A basement, according to the NFIP, includes any
part of a building where all four sides are lClcated below
ground level. This definition "Ias used with one exception.

3
