<br />Issue A-4: Child Awareness (Ages 5-8) <br />Background: Successful children's education programs such as Smokey Bear and <br />Sesame Street are well known. Children are very recepLive LO family safety concepts. A <br />cartoon book on wildland/urban interface fire safeLy specifically for children can provide <br />basic infonnation. The book could be Laken home for family discussion. <br /> <br />Action Element: Utilize exisLing wildland/urban inLerface fire safety cartoon bookleL <br />such as used in Utah for Colorado children. Booklet distribution be accomplished by <br />local fire agencies as part of a wildfire hazard mitigation projecL in schools and youth <br />organizations. <br /> <br />Agencies: <br />~ - already available or develop locally. <br />Distribution - fire departments */* service clubs, counties, Colorado Stale <br />Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, US Forest Service, <br />Estimated Costs: Printing costs. $10 per 50 booklets. <br /> <br />Funding Sources: Local fire agencies and service clubs. <br /> <br />Schedule: Begin immediaLely and ongoing thereafter, <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />Issue A-S: Public Awareness <br />Background: The individual property owner/occupanL has the primary responsibility <br />of fire safety in the wildland/urban interface. Only a limited number of individuals in the <br />general public are aware of the wildfire threat. Information is available, but a coordinated <br />approach to awareness and education is needed, <br /> <br />Action Element: Continue efforts of the Education and Awareness Task Force of the <br />state Wildfire Mitigation Committee to increase public awareness about wildlandfurban <br />interface fire threats. <br /> <br />Agencies: Colorado Stale Forest Service *;* US Forest Service, Bureau of Land <br />Management, Colorado StaLe University, counties, fire departments, fire insurance <br />industry, news media. <br /> <br />Estimated Costs: $5,000 annually. <br /> <br />Funding Sources: Pooled enLity funds; phase new projects into annual budgets. <br /> <br />Schedule: Ongoing, <br /> <br />Issue A-6: Public Awareness Study <br />Background: Except for fire professionals and emergency managemenL personnel, <br />mosL people do not understand the wildlandfurban interface fire problems or solutions <br />because they may be unaware of them. <br /> <br />Action Element: Conduct a baseline study to define the level of awareness of the <br />interface residents. Based on findings, develop maLerials required to increase citizen <br />knowledge. Detennine if education/awareness level has improved through a secondary <br />survey. <br /> <br />Agencies: Federal Emergency Management Agency */* Colorado State Forest Service, <br />US ForesL Service, Bureau of Land Management, counties, universities. <br /> <br />Estimated Costs: $30,000. <br /> <br />Funding Sources: Special grants. <br /> <br />Schedule: Initiate study 1997; distribuLeresults 1998. <br /> <br />20 <br />
