<br />Issue A-2: Education of Elected Officials <br />Backgrouru1: Elected officials make the ultimate decisions about wildfIre safeLy laws, <br />regulations and emergency response funding. They must be aware of wildfIre problems <br />and possible solutions, including hazard disclosures outlined in Issue A,8. GrantCs) for <br />new video productions. <br /> <br />Schedule: Annually for purchases and briefIngs. <br /> <br />Issue A-3: Dissemination of Wildfire Hazard Mitigation <br />Information <br />Backgrouru1: Many wildland/urban interface residents did not know they were in <br />hazardous areas until a wildfire forced them to evacuate. They have no easy access to <br />wildfire hazard mitigation information. Residents must know about wildfIre hazards and <br />participate in actions to better protect themselves. Videos and brochures are highly <br />effective instructional tools. Videos and other publications can be checked ouL by <br />individuals or groups. Public facilities such as libraries and fIre stations are available to <br />place such information. <br /> <br />Action Element: Develop a public awareness campaign about protecting againsL <br />wildfires in the interface using educational materials. Place available wildfIre hazard <br />miLigation videos and publications for residential areas in schools, public libraries and <br />other public offIces near interface communities on a free check-ouL basis. Provide <br />handouts and home checklists to school children for sharing with their parents. Mentify <br />50 locaLions and provide each with multiple sets of videos and publications on each topic. <br />Advertise the availability and how to access the informaLion. UpdaLe and replace as <br />needed. Hold Lets Talk Fire awareness forums for communities to learn about wildfIre <br />risks, evacuation procedures and mitigation measures they can implement. <br /> <br />Agencies: Local fIre departments *r Office of Emergency Management, counLy <br />emergency offIces, public libraries, Colorado State ForesL Service, Bureau of Land <br />Management, US Forest Service, Federal Emergency Managemem Agency, National Fire <br />Protection Association. <br /> <br />Estimated Costs: $100 per information set.
