.

In the lower portion of the basin, the area between 11th

Avenue and Stapleton International Airport is fully developed and

contained a 1970 population of about 17,000. Business and

commercial activities such as motels, restaurants, and small

local commercial activities are located along Colfax and Montview

Avenues. Residential development consists of single-family

homes, duplexes, and larger multiple-family dwellings.

ENVIRONMENTAL SETTING

As described earlier, most of the basin is developed for

urban uses. The downstream part of the basin is occupied by a

small shopping center and Stapleton International Airport. A

major portion of the center of the basin is occupied by Lowry Air

Force Base. Much of the basin, both upstream from and downstream

from Lowry Air Force Base, is residential.

The downstream part of the basin is the most densely

developed. Areas such as Stapleton International Airport, Lowry

Air Force Base, and some apartment complexes nearly obscure, the

watercourse. In several locations, the stream is concrete lined

or flows through a concrete conduit. The stream flows in a

natural channel in only a few areas. Along this natural channel

there is very little vegetation. The representative plant spe-

cies include cattails, sunflowers, sweetclover, wild asparagus,

and cocklebur. Natural habitat in the Westerly Creek flood plain

is almost nonexistent. There are a few remnants of the short-

grass prairie vegetation present in the upstream reaches of the

basin.

10

.
