.

was uplifted, overlying sedimentary beds were ruptured and

upturned. These older rock formations, ranging in age from Upper

Cretaceous to Pennsylvanian, were folded and upturned into the

presently existing hogbacks. The younger overlying Tertiary

formations remain relatively flat. ,The erosional surface of the

Dawson is the top of the uppermost Tertiary bedrock formation.

Pleistocene and Recent overburdened materials of alluvial,

residual, and eolian origin overlie the Dawson formation. The

Dawson is underlain by about 11,000 feet of sedimentary rocks

ranging in age from the Paleozoic to Cenozoic.

SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC DESCRIPTION

The upper part of the basin upstream from Lowry Air Force

Base is undergoing rapid urbanization. This part of the basin

had a population of about 13,000 in 1970. Aerial photographs

taken in 1974 indicate that development in the area doubled

between 1970 and 1974. Most of this development consists of low

to medium density single-family dwellings and new apartment-

townhouse complexes. Ninety percent of the dwelling units are

single-family units. Business-commercial zones are located along

the major streets.

Lowry Air Force Base is located in the central portion of the

basin. The estimated 1978 population of Lowry Air Force Base was

approximately 16,000. Approximately 12,000 persons, including

4,300 civilians, were employed on the base. In addition, there

were about 1,400 military tenants on the base and about 2,800

dependents of base personnel.

.

9
