.

weather in winter are normally experienced but are usually of

$lh,rt- (hn..lIt-,o" a~d ~re f~tl(,~~ h~'r ",,!<!'h mClrp m(HiflonH:flo

temperatures.

The average annual precipitation is 14.5 inches; 75 percent

of this occurs during the months of April through September. The

summer precipitation results from generally widespread low

pressure systems with associated low intensity rainfall and

cloudiness. Flood producing storms are generally sporadic,

localized, of high intensity, and of relatively short duration.

The flood season occurs in the months of May through August;

thus, snowmelt is not usually a contributing factor.

GEOGRAPHICAL AND GEOLOGICAL DESCRIPTION

The Westerly Creek basin lies along the east flank of the

Rocky Mountain Front Range. Hogbacks consisting of steeply

tilted beds of sedimentary rocks which were raised up by the

uplift of the Front Range are located along this edge of the

mountain range. Flat, grass covered tablelands called pediments

slope eastward from the hogbacks. These tablelands are covered

by coarse alluvium and separated from each other by broad, flat

bottomed valleys. At the lower elevations, the tablelands spread

out to the gently sloping surface of the lowland plains.

Westerly Creek basin is located in the western limits of these

plains.

The geology of the basin is closely linked to the history of

the Rocky Mountains.
