I

I
I.

Machinery can be bulkheaded, greased, and packed to keep mud out. Doors

and windows can be battened to keep out floating debris. Plate glass

windows can be braced, valves on sewers and drains closed, lumber tied

I

down. II

It should be noted that many people, even when warned of an approach-

I

ing flood, will not believe or will not want to believe what is about to

happen and therefore, do very little. This is compounded by the lack of

I

sufficient warning time for most of the uncontrolled streams in the

I

Denver area. For these reasons, length of warning would not be a signifi-

cant factor in flood damage studies for most of the Denver region.

I

I

Season of Flood Occurrence

Most of what is situated on the flood plain is fixed and does not vary

Ie
'I

with the season. A few things, however, do vary with the time of year. In

the winter, there may be thousands of bags of fertilizer in warehouses. In

early summer, the warehouse could be emptied of the material. Most Denver

I

area flooding has occurred in the past and thus will probably occur in the

future, during the months of May, June, July, August, and September, When

I

determining contents value for use in depth-damage calculations, consider-

at ion should be given to equipment and inventories that usually exist during

I

the above five months.

I

Time of Day When Peak Flow Occurs

I

Flooding that occurs at night with little or no warning can result in

greater damages than if the flooding had occurred during the day. A flood

I.
I

warning may be announced at midnight but with most people asleep, little

23

I
