.,

.

.

,,'

mapping was originated in 1976 by the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation for
the Colorado River Water Quality Improvement Program. The Bureau has
,given their contractor, Aero-Metric Engineering, Inc., of Sheboygan',
Wisconsin, permission to contract directly with the Colorado Water
Conservation Board to obtain the basic topographic data. The topo-
graphic maps, digitized cross section elevations, aerial photography
and other ne~essary data ultimately will be turned over to the Corps
of Engineers ,for use in the engineering studies. .

The engineering studies will include research of past historical
flooding; an hydrological analysis to determine the 10-, 50-, 100-
and 500-year frequency peak flood discharges; and an hydraulic ~nalysis
to,determine flood flow velocities, elevations, and to delineate the
flooded a~eas on the maps.

The hydrologic analysis will consider the effect of the proposed
Ridgeway Reservoir on the Uncompahgre River and the several large
reservoirs on the Gunnison River System above Delta.

The results of the hydraulic analysis including maps, stream
profiles, cross sections, and a table of flood elevations by stream
station are designed to be a useful tool for land use administration
on the local level.

The CWCB is serving as project coordinator for the study and
will, review the work, including maps and engineering studies, to see
that it is being conducted by technically acceptable methods and that
the results are compatablewith other studies in the region.

The Delta County study will tie directly with a similar flood-
plain study being prepared for the Uncompahgre River in Montrose
County.

Project Costs

By coordinating the project with the Corps of Engineers, the
costs for detailed engineering studies will be borne by the federal
government resulting in a considerable cost savings to Delta County.
The costs for report writing and publishing of a final report will be
borne by the CWCB. The CWCB will therefore be responsible for pre-
paring and publishing a Floodplain Information report for distribution
to the. public.

The total cost for acquisition of the topographic data is
$11,999.65 which represents a considerable savings since the bulk
of the work was completed for the Bureau of Reclamation. This cost
is being shared as shown below:

CWCB
City of Delta
Delta County
Total

$ 6,499.65
-0-
5,500.00
$11,999.65

-2-
