I,

~~

.

.

For Immediate Release

.I'

Project Status

March 2, 1978

Floodplain Information Report
Uncompahgre River and Gunnison River
. in Delta County, Colorado

Background

State law charges, the Colorado Water Conservation Board (CWCB)
to "designate" and "approve" all flood hazard area studies before
local governments can legally regulate floodplains in their juris-
diction. Under the law, accurate floodplain information for desig-
nated and, approved storm or floodway runoff channels is then made
available to county and municipal governments. The local governments
can then establish their own zoning regulations to control land use .
in.thefloodplain with the objective of lessening or avoiding the
haiards to. persons and damage to property.

There are presently no definitive floodplain studies of the
Uncompahgre and Gunnison Rivers in Delta County except for large
scale floodprone area maps prepared using approximate methods by the
U.S. Geological Survey and the Delta County Planning Department.
Delta County is presently experiencing rapid growth and accurate
knowledge of the 100-year floodplain elevations and boundaries is
necessary for effective floodplain management practices.

Project Description

The objective of the study is to determine the 10-, 50-, 100-,
and 500-year frequency flood elevations along the Uncompahgre River
and Gunnison River in the vicinity of Delta, Colorado. The floodplain
shall be delineated by the Sacramento District of the U.S. Army
Corps of Engineers on maps furnished by the County, in cooperation
with the CWCB. The CWCB shall document the study by publishing a
floodplain information report.

The study reach along the Uncompahgre River begins at its con-
fluence with the Gunnison River and extends approximately 7 miles
upstream to the Delta-Montrose County line. The drainage basin of
the Uncompahgre River at Delta is approximately 1,129 square miles.

The study reach along the Gunnison River begins about 5 miles
below Delta near the confluence with Roubideau Creek and extends
upstream approximately 13 miles to a point approximately 1 mile above
Austin, Colorado. The drainage.basin of the Gunnison River at Delta
is over 5,300 square miles.

Detailed topographic maps, on a scale of 1" = 200' and 2'
contour intervals, are available of the entire study reach.
