Topics not specifically included because their scopes either are too broad
or too limited are:

climate change
environmental pollution
natural resources

shrink-swell soils
structure fi res
subsidence

The inventory summarizes data collected by the Federal government--
primarily the major departments of the Executive Branch--although where
deemed relevant, a number of Legislative Branch offices and independent
and quasi-official agencies are included. Agencies of a regional nature
(i.e., the Tennessee Valley Authority, the river basin commissions, and
the power administrations) are not included. Federally funded projects
(such as universities) are not included with the exception of the Earthquake
Engineering Research Center. A planner or researcher interested in infor-
mation on a specific locale should check with Federal district and state
offices, state geological and land-use offices, local planning offices,
local universities, nonprofit organizations, private commercial and indus-
trial firms, or with the Natural Hazards Research and Applications Informa-
tion Center, University of Colorado, Boulder, CO 80309.

METHOD

The process of summarlzlng the data resources usually began with tele-
phone calls to people responsible for programs related to natural hazards.
A draft summary was prepared based on telephone and available written
information. The summary was then sent to the contact person for review,
with a cover letter explaining the inventory. In most cases, it was returned
with corrections and additions. Although each contact had an opportunity to
review the description of the data resource, the authors accept responsibil-
ity for the accuracy of the descriptions, which should not be taken as
officially approved statements.

We have tried to be complete and thorough within the scope of the
inventory and available resources; however, there are, no doubt, a number
of unidentified resources. Descriptions included in this report may be
inaccurate or incomplete; others will be outdated as prices, data content,
format, and contact people change (see listing of agencies in the new Federal

4
