Although the emphasis of the inventory is to describe existing data
resources, it also includes a number of offices that might serve a referral
function--such as the departmental emergency coordinators. In addition,
we have included libraries, computerized search services, and public sales
offices {U.S. Government Printing Office, National Technical Information
Service, etc.).

Most of the listed agencies regularly share their data with the public.
However, some of the data resources are not organized for public distribu-
tion, which means that the data, although available, may not be easily
accessed. A number of agencies, such as the U.S. Geological Survey and the
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, exchange their data.
In some cases, data exchanges are made in lieu of charges for the data.

The inventory includes more summaries of data describing the natural
event and post-disaster investigations than references to sources of demo-
graphic and economic data. The latter would themselves be the proper sub-
ject of another inventory. Hence, only the most relevant sources are in-
cluded along with several computerized systems to integrate the raw data
and planning needs. Information useful in natural hazards planning is in-
cluded when listed in bibliographies or library-listed series of reports.
Academic, nonprofit, state, and local organizations publish much of this
information.

Few of the data resources include information about individuals. Where
this low level of aggregation is desired, special arrangements are generally
needed to insure that personal privacy is not violated.

The major natural hazards covered in this inventory are (see SUbject
Index for summary page numbers):

Avalanche
Drought
Earthquake
Erosion

Flood
Landslide
Lightning

Severe Storm
Tornado
Tropical Cyclone

Tsunami
Volcano
Wil dfi re

3
