In February 1973 Federal Judge WillIs
Ritter in Salt Lake City ruled that the
level of Lake Powell must be kept below
the boundary of Rainbow Bfidge Na-
tional Monument. As a fesull, heavy
releases of waler were made to keep
the lake level down, which fesulted in
unanticipated power revenue. On ap-
peal to the Tenth Circuit Court 01 Ap-
peals a Stay 01 Execution on the ruling
was granted in May, Subsequently,
water was stored in compliance with
legal requirements. Substantial energy
was imported into the CRSP marketing
area by purchase and interchange. As
01 June 30, it appeared that the high
funoff would bring Lake Powell 10 an
all time high.

Revenues forwarded to the TreasufY lor
the year were $26,353.107. Of this
amount. Interest payments amounted.
10 $12,543.107. and the balance of
$13.810.000 was applied as payment
on investment.

On October 10. 1972, an oil pipeline
near the Four Corners ruptured, spilling
about 250,000 gallons of crude oil into
the San Juan River. which flows into
Lake Powell. Bureau of Reclamation
crews quickly towed a log boom up the
lake and stretched it across the canyon
to catch the oil. NatIonal Pafk Service
men brought in earthmoving equip-
ment. Prevented lrom going further
down the lake by the log boom, the oil

4

was finally removed and buried by
crews from the Texas-New Mexico Pipe~
line Company, assisted by the U.S.
Coast Guard. The Environmental PfO-
teet ion Agency directed final cleanup
operations.

On June 30 a fish eradication program
was conducted in the poollorming be-
hind Soldier Creek Dam on the Bon-
neville Unit. Rotenone and explosives
were used to rid the small lake and in-
flowing streams of trash fish so that
contamination by undesirable species
will not result when the new lake joins
the old in an enlarged Strawberry Res.
ervoir. The program was sponsored by
the Bureau of Reclamation, Bureau of
Sport Fisheries and Wildlife, and Utah
Division 01 Wildlife Resources.

,,,,

-;-~ J
"

....

~

-
