FLOODWAY DETERMINATION USING COMPUTER PROGRAM HEC-2

by Vernon R. Bonner

J
,

INTRODUCTION

,

The purpose of this document is to illustrate how computer program
HEC-, can be used to develop a designated f100dway as required for
Type 1a Flood Insurance Studies. It is assumed the reader has a knowl-
edge of the basic input requirements described in the Users Manual
(reference ~) for the computer program.
An approach followed by the Corps of Engineers for flood plain
management is presented in a paper entitled "The Regulatory F1oodway"
(reference 1). A procedure for delineating a floodway is given in a
pape' titled "General Guidelines for Development of Floodway Data"
(reference 2). This training document includes information presented
in those references and presents the computer application of the ap-
proach for f100dway delineation outlined in reference 2.

OEFINITIONS*

"

a. Natural F100dway is the channel of a watercourse and those

portions of the adjoining flood plain which are reasonable required

to carry and discharge the floodwaters of a selected probability-of-

occurrence flood.

*Excerpts from reference 2.

1
