Since the surveys for the quadrangles listed in Table No.2 were ads from 37

to 51 years ago, the maps do not show existing improv:ements. The extent of

the watershed and other pertinent data are shown on Sheet- No.1 0 Appendix A,
entitled IIHuerfano River, Colorado, Watershed Map, dated Mai'ch 15 1941",,'
10. Economic Develooment - Ponulation. '- The tQtal pOPu1ati -h of the
Huerfano River baSin, exclusive of the Cucha.ra valley, ,is. estimat d from the
1930 census to be approximately 5,700. The watershed is sparsely settled and
there are no cities within the Huerfano basin proper. The"prinei a1 towns
with their ,populations as estimated by the U.S. Census Bureau are Gardner,
125, Tioga, 300 and Del Carbon, 300.. A comparison or the 1930 c~ Bus"-with
available data of the 1940 census shows a decrease in population f appraxi-

mately 6.8 pereent' in Huerfano County, and an increase of approxi atel~ 4.2

per~ent in Pueblo County.
11. Economic Develonment -- Occunation and Industries. - T;he
pr~ncipal industries in the Huerfano River' basin" are agriculture nd
mining, both dry and irrigation farming methods being employed. he
raising of cattle and sheep' is an important part of the agricult a1
industry~ Coal is the principal mineral resource and is.mined at dif-'
ferent points in the section -west of Federal Highway No. 8S-87. oal

mining has, however., declined in recent years and many of the min s are

not operated at the present time and many or the miners have turn d to
