.

..

-

241

DRAFT

Alternative 1 will develop:

. Data. bases for irrigated acreage, cropping patterns/land use and source of water supply for
current (2000) conditions and for three historic conditions (mid-19 50s, mid-1970s and late
1980s). These data are required to understand water use over time and for historic
calibration ofthe planning models.

. Groundwater data collection efforts will focus on obtaining those data required for
refinement and/or development of groundwater models for two areas, the Denver Basin
(and its overlying alluvium), and the Lower South Platte Alluvium. The data collection
includes: (1) collecting historical pumping data, (2) performing a feasibility investigation to
determine the best method for estimating historical pumping, (3) completing estimates of
historical pumping using the method detennined by the feasibility study, (4) COllecting
historical reports and digitizing maps of aquifer configuration and properties and filling in
missing data, (5) installation of 10 piezometer nests along the South Platte River and its
alluvium to measure riverbed conductance and installation of 3 piezometer nests in the
Denver Basin bedrock with associated pumping tests, (6) a "single snapshot" of historical
water level data, (7) collection of current water level data from 120 wells, (8) installation of
5 piezometer transects along the South Platte River (2 wells each), and (9) additional
piezometers at a location yet to be detennined.

. Required data to support the administration tool will be collected through installation of six
new stream gauges and telemetry equipment on seven key diversions as recommended by
the Division 1 (Greeley Office) of the Division of Water Resources. Estimates will be made
of missing data for streamflow, diversions and reservoirs.

Alternative 2

Data for the South Platte and North Platte River Basins will be obtained in Alternative 2, but no
data for the Republican River Basin will be collected. Alternative 2 includes all Alternative 1 tasks
and data plus the fOllowing:

. Additional groundwater data to be used in the refinement and/or development of the two
groundwater models described in Alternative 1 will be collected. This will include those
applicable groundwater data collection activities for the Denver Basin aquifers and
overlying alluvium as recommended by the Senate Bi1196-7 4 study (Denver Basin and
South Platte River Basin Technical Study), as well as similar data collection activities for
the Lower South Platte Alluvium. This additional data collection will focus on those data
sets tha.t will significantly assist development of the SPDSS by providing for a more robust
calibration of the groundwater models. This alternative includes: (I) more rigorous
investigation of aquifer configuration and property data, (2) installation of 7 more
piezometer nests in the South Platte River alluvium, (3) installation of7 additional nested
piezometers in the Denver Basin bedrock (and the associated pumping tests), (4) 2 more
"snapshots" of historical water level data, (5) 5 additional piezometer transects (6 wells
each), and (6) additional piezometers if required.

p:\data\gen\spdss\datacollectionrptdraft\finaldraft\cxecutive summa/)'. doc

ES-3
