1

only feasible approach to control in the
upper basin is to adopt flood control in
connection with some comprehensive plan for
water resources development. We feel that in
order to achieve a comprehensive solution
satisfactorily in this basin it will require
the combined efforts of all the agencies in-
terested in water resources in the South platte
Basin.

Our second study is our Flood Plain In-
formation Studies for the Denver metropolitan
region. Now the Denver metropolitan region,
as defined by the Inter-County Regional Planning
Commission, comprises a gross area of some 800
square miles; it involves 43 separate streams
which flow through the metropolitan area, the
largest being the South Platte River itself
and the smaller being such as Sanderson Gulch,
weir Gulch, Marcy Gulch, etc. We have 412
valley miles to evaluate to publish reports
for flood plain information purposes Which
means a rather detailed hydrologic analyses
and very detailed hydraulic analyses in order
to define flood lines in such a way that they
will be useful to local planners. The objec-
tive of this, of course, is stated in Public
Law 86-645, the Flood Plain Information Act
which was adopted in 1961. The initial report
on this will be completed within a few weeks.
We will, of course, send copies of this report
to the colorado Water Conservation Board, to
the Inter-County Regional Planning Commission
and to the Chief of Engineers for review.
This will take place in about two weeks. After
the review and any changes which may be neces-
sary we will then issue a formal report which
will be widely available to the public.

1

Incidentally, we are issuing the reports
covering the 412 valley miles of flood plain
information in seven volumes. The second
volume will cover Sand and Tollgate Creeks
and lower Cherry Creek. We expect to issue
the draft copy of this report in about two
months. The remainder of the study to be on
