7178

we want to make as much progress and get the
opinions of the citizens and residents here
today.

First of all, as you know the Chatfield Dam
is a project of the Corps of Engineers and the I
responsibility for this comes out of the Omaha
District. ,

Today, I would like to introduce the Chief
Engineer of that District, the man responsible
ultimately for the project to Washington,
Mr. Burnett. Mr. Burnett, glad to have you with
us.1I

J:.lR. BURNETT:

"Thank you."

MR. STAPLETON:

"Then, Mr. Dover. Will you please stand up.
We will be hearing from you a little later on -
also of the Corps of Engineers.

Now, so the board can hear first hand where
we stand as a board on the project of channel-
ization, I am going to ask Mr. Sparks to briefly
run over the current status, Larry."

entation.

Mr. Sparks used a map to illustrate this part of his pres-

MR. SPARKS:

"Mr. Chairman, I will refer to the map here.
When this project was first authorized by the
Congress in 1950, a program of channel improve-
ment was authorized from the dam itself to about
Fort Morgan. After the flood of '65 the project
was again reviewed and some revisions were made.
The costs have gone up so greatly since 1950 and
for other reasons that the immediate project will
concern only the building of Chatfield Dam and
the channelization of about 7 miles of the stream
immediately below the dam.

I

Under the appropriate acts of Congress, the
Corps of Engineers has responsibility for con-
structing the dam and securing the lands and
rights-of-way entirely at federal expense.
