The worst evil
being if that land is subdivided and sold out
for homesites it would preclude any further
public enjoyment of the area.

If the Castlewood dam is constructed, this
would be a public area and a public park would
be established."

. "Our recommendation on this in the report
is that the function of recreation be added
to the authorization. We are not recommending
re-authorization or any thing like this.

The report on Sand and Toll Gate Creeks
we feel should not be held up because of this
controversy. In fact, if we go ahead with this
thing and get money for preconstruction plan-
ning, we would then be in a better position to
to into a detailed study of these alternatives
that have been suggested for Castlewood."

"How extensive have your hearings been in
the area, or with the Denver and Aurora admin-
istrations?"

"We held a hearing on April 30, 1969 and
approximately 300 people attended. The land-
owners in the area of Castlewood were repre-
sented by an attorney and a petition in oppos-
ition was tendered at the meeting.

We held another meeting in January of this
year and it was attended by about 250 people.
There was some opposition expressed at the
meeting and another petition was handed in with
60 plus signatures opposing the dam.

We have since received several letters in
opposition. We have received letters from
Franktown and Parker in support.

The district engineer has a Colorado
citizens committee on environmental planning

-23-
