Cherry Cree~ extension. There is po particular
problem with eliminating the overflow in Toll
Gate Creek because that is necessary unless
additional facilities are built on Toll Gate.
This would require a lot of work on the channel
of Cherry Creek between the dam and the South I
Platte River. That channel is almost exclus-
ively within the City of Denver. "'.t "".nne1 .
has been used as a garbage dump over the years. ~~
Cement blocks and many tons of dirt have been
qumped into it. Not only dirt but debris,
grass clippings, and the like, have been dumped
into Cherry Creek. The channel has not been
kept clear. It is badly eroded, the walls are
in danger of caving in if any substantial flow
of water were permitted '(;0 go down through
there. A large part of the expenditure would
be devoted to rectifying that channel through
the City of Denver.

The most cont~oversial part of the project
is the proposed construction of the Castlewood
dam. That is in a fairly beautiful area and is
almost totally undeveloped at the present time.
So people who are concerned apout the environ-
ment are concerned about the construction of a
dam in that setting. There have been attempts
made to get the state to buy that property for
park purposes.

At the present time numerous subdividers
are also interested in it. We understand there
is considerable land speculation going on in
the immediate area. If subdividers get control
of it, it will not remain in its natural state.
So the problem that the environmentalists are
faced with right now is whether or not they
can preserve any of the area. There is a
certainty that if this dam were constructed it
would destroy a part of that natural area.

I

There is some opposition to the construc-
tion of the Castlewood Darn. I think the environ-
mentalists should make somp. study about this to
determine whether or not this perhaps may be

-22-
