.

.

.

147

3. Mountain Groundwater Study

Grantee/Contractor: Jefferson County Planning and Zoning Department

Amount of request: $50,000

Product produced: A study of all the mountainous areas of Jefferson COWlty which includes about
385 square miles (excluding the Pike National Forest) and ranges in elevation from about 6,000 to
11,000 feet. The pilot study area encompasses the Turkey Creek Drainage basin that includes the
towns of Conifer, Aspen Park and Indian Hills. The study would define the present quantity and
quality of the groWld water resources of the mOWltainous parts of Jefferson COWlty, monitor the
ground water levels, precipitation, and water quality, and provide a method to simulate effects of
current and future development on the resource.

Water planning relationship: Two-thirds of the county is in the mOWltains, and on private weIl
and individual septic systems. With increased development pressures on an area with very little
public water and sanitation, it is becomes increasingly more important to monitor both the
quantity and quality of the ground water resource

4. Larimar-Weld Water Bank Investigation

Grantee/Contractors: Larimer-Weld Water Issues Group

Amount of request: $ 120,000

Product produced: Water bank study to examine the need, feasibility, design and
administration of a water bank to serve the area bounded Wyoming, the Continental Divide, the
Town of Berthoud and Greeley. They would also undertake an education program to increase
awareness about issues like conservation, supply, and water banking.

Water planning relationship: The group believes the study has the potential to provide useful
tools for regional water basin planning that affects a large area of the state.

Stream and Lake Protection

1. Instr.eam Flow Planning and Management

Grantee/Contractor: CWCB

Amount ofrequest: $150,000

Cost share and partners: Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO), Division of Wildlife (DOW)
Division of Parks and Recreation (DPOR) and others.

Products Produced:

· A detailed description of appropriated instream flow (ISF) water rights describing their basis
in the preservation of the natural environment. This information will be tied to the existing
instream flow database that provides data on each ISF segment such as location, amount,
segment length, water availability information, and methodology used. A web-based product
is anticipated.

· A prioritized listing of ISF water rights throughout the state to enable the CWCB to better
locate stream gaging stations where they are needed.
