from Chapman Gulch to Hunter Creek was a
recent award last August for $7,541,053. This
slide shows the start of construction at the
outlet portal which you see at this location.
A few months later, a snowshed protects the
tunnel entrance. Progress to date shows 2,176
feet of this tunnel drilled, or 9 percent
completed.

The Nast Tunnel to Ivanhoe Creek was
also awarded last August for $7,522,000. A
rather large rock got in the way and it is
being drilled and blasted to get down to
grade at the tunnel portal site.

This job is unique because the contractor
is experimenting with a 'mole', a work mole
imported from Germany. A real toothy piece
of equipment when you see it head-on. The
mole was moved into the tunnel and note the
rough walls and overbreak in this section of
tunnel and compare it to the smooth bore of
the mole's cutter head after it went to work.
Progress shows 1,181 feet of tunnel drilled
to March 1, or about 8 percent completed.

This is Twin Lakes where the construction
of the Mt. Elbert Pumped-Storage Powerplant on
the north shore (to the right) is about to get
under way. Right-of-way is now being purchased.

Here I have tried to depict the location
of the powerplant, the penstock and the fore-
bay. The system will incorporate pumped-back
storage. One unit of 100 megawatts generat-
ing capacity will be installed initially with
provision for a second unit to be added at a
later date. The specifications are now being
prepared for the powerplant structure and a
contract is expected to be awarded this fiscal
year.

Environmental needs have been given
special treatment at Twin Lakes. The structure
has been designed architecturally to blend into
the area. The penstocks will be buried. The

I

I
